Farmers Should Secure Feed Early

NEW ZEALAND - Market analysts have called on the cereal and livestock industries to study reports from the Arable Industry Marketing Initiative (AIMI) that barley stocks are low.

Unsold barley is 40 per cent lower than last year, despite a good arable season and harvest.

Federated farmers say this shows the impact on the drought on forage supplies and that farmers should brace themselves for a tough ride.

In addition, the Fonterra outlooks have boosted dairy confidence and feed buying is higher than normal.

Best advice is to secure feed supplies early, say Federated Farmers.

“Based on AIMI figures, and what I see around me, I would expect stocks of feed grain to be tight going through to next harvest” said Ian Mackenzie, Federated Farmers Grain & Seed Chairman.

“I would encourage all Grain & Seed industry participants to look at these figures carefully and make full use of the tool where possible. The undertaking of this survey is an industry initiative to address the knowledge gap between growers/sellers and buyers, who have professional staff, dedicated monitoring the supply and demand situation,” Mr Mackenzie concluded.
