FMD Outbreak in Russia Affects Cattle

RUSSIA - The Russian veterinary authorities have reported an outbreak of foot and mouth disease (FMD) in Karachayevo-Cherkesskaya Resp.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received an immediate notification on 10 June. The affected population consists of cattle. The outbreak was initially observed on 3 June and confirmed on 8 June after a nested RT-PCR test was conducted at the FGBI "Federal Centre for Animal Health", the OIE's reference laboratory.

A total of 600 animals were found susceptible, out of which 90 cases were reported. No deaths were recorded and no animals were destroyed.

The source of the outbreak remains inconclusive.
