The National Health Service and the Ministry for Public Health have coordinated the two diseases under the project, ‘Comprehensive Approach Leptospirosis and Brucellosis in Honduras.’

Under the authority of the multi-governmental group, the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), the programme aims to reduce disease transmission risks between animals and humans, a considerable risk in a country where so many people live in close contact with domestic and wild animals , says Romeo Montoya, disease consultant at PAHO.

By coordinating control programmes in El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Cuba and the Dominican Republic, amongst others, a comprehensive data set of diagnosis and treatment should be built up.

As the rainy season begins, Teresa Velasquez, head of the Public Health Zoonosis Programme said the need to communicate with rural areas about the scheme is urgent, as is the education of technical and veterinary staff.

“We are being advised by Cuban experts from the Institute of Tropical Medicine to share their experience in order to strengthen diagnostics in both humans and animals,” said Mrs Velasquez.
