The outbreak was confirmed by the Bostwana Ministry of Agriculture after routine surveillance samples proved positive for FMD upon inspection in the Botswana Vaccine Institute.

Affecting the eastern lying village of Matopi, the notification has led to dipping and spraying of relevant livestock and a vaccination programme of over 100,000 cattle and sheep/goat vaccinations.

OIE report the outbreak is part of an on-going FMD surveillance programme since disease identification in April 2011.
