Bluetongue Free Status Declared

SPAIN – After inspection of the Campo de Gibraltar region found no trace of serotype 8 of the Bluetongue disease, the last area affected with the virus, a free status has been granted across the whole of the country.

After a national government surveillance programme showed a two year absence of Bluetongue serotype 8 the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment has decided that a free status for the disease could be granted.

Significant advances in controlling the virus have been possible thanks to public and private veterinary services, farmers, laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry, the government has said.

It is hoped that the new disease free status will facilitate in the exports of livestock from Spain.
