MLA: Market Update-Hot Weather Increases Throughput

AUSTRALIA - The hot, dry weather in eastern states has prompted an increase in throughput with the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator finishing at 310.75 ¢/kg cwt, report analysts at Meat and Livestock Australia.

Throughput surges

Total national throughput so far this week lifted 16 per cent at markets reported by MLA’s NLRS, with a large increase reported through NSW. Numbers in Queensland remained steady on last week despite fewer cattle yarded at Roma store.

Consignments at Wagga lifted 31 per cent with plain cattle dominating throughput, while Tamworth yarded three times more cattle than last week.

Throughput in Victoria remained relatively steady with Shepparton the only selling centre to record a significant lift in numbers, up 30 per cent. Numbers in SA were up with more cattle yarded at Naracoorte, while WA and Tasmania were steady on last week’s levels.

Plain lines dominate

The lift in numbers across saleyards was indicative of the continual dry hot weather reported throughout the majority of the eastern states.

Despite some cooler weather of late, the lack of rain continues to affect the quality of young cattle as the majority of yardings remain plain.

There are some quality supplementary fed cattle scattered through markets, with processor buyers keen to secure the better quality lines, while feeder and restockers remain selective across most markets.

Toowoomba and Wodonga had a reduction in buyers present while buyers across all other markets were present and operating.

Prices mixed

At the conclusion of Tuesdays markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) finished on 310.75¢/kg cwt. Trade steers settled on 171¢, while feeder steers averaged 167¢/kg. The medium steer indicator made 163¢, while heavy steers finished on 174¢/kg. Medium cows made 124¢/kg.
