31 July 2012

CHILE and CHINA - A major advance in cooperation with China on the fight against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) was the main statement of ministers who participated in the XXIII meeting of the Southern Agricultural Council.

During the meeting, the Ministers of Agriculture analysed the overall prospects of cooperation between Mexico and China.

In this context, the ministers pledged to promote regional strategies redoubling efforts to identify and seize opportunities that arise from the Asia Pacific. They also committed to examining the proposals made by the Chinese premier, Wen Jiabao, through the formation of a working group under the agricultural policy network of CAS supported by FAO and the Inter-American Institute for Agriculture (IICA), in order to deepen the construction of an agenda for dialogue and sectoral action with China.

In addition, the meeting discussed the situation of FMD in the region and pledged to strengthen health services in order to continue with the objectives outlined in the hemispheric plan of Mercosur FMD free programme.

The Minister of Agriculture of Chile, Luis Mayol was satisfied with the agreements reached at the meeting. "We discussed issues of great importance for the region. All the countries have a common goal which is to promote the region as a supplier of safe food, safe and healthy the rest of the world, so we believe we are facing a great opportunity. We know that everyone has different situations and have shared those experiences with the aim to empower ourselves," said Mr Mayol.
