Government Strengthens FMD Control

24 April 2012

ECUADOR - The Ecuadorian Agency for Quality Assurance, under the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Aquaculture and Fisheries, has acquired four mobile campers to strengthen road checkpoints as part of its Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) control programme.

These vehicles were strategically placed in the provinces of Esmeraldas, Pichincha, Tungurahua and Canar.

Additionally, the country has 14 permanent road checkpoints, which allows for greater vigilance in the movement of livestock that are moved from the various provinces to market, feedlots and slaughter.

In order to improve sanitary and phyto sanitary practices, campers are equipped with everything needed to address outbreaks of FMD, bovine rabies, plant material entering without proper import permits, and cattle being transported without mobilisation guides.
