El Observador has said that the main suppliers of genetics in Uruguay are Argentina, Brazil, United States, Canada and New Zealand.

The Directorate General of Livestock Services (DGSG) of the Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (BHAG) decided to temporarily prohibit the importation of genetic material from European countries by the onset of the disease Schmallenberg, which can affect cattle, sheep, goats and buffaloes.

The company Gensur, for example, just imported from France about 3,000 doses of semen of the Normande breed every two years. In 2010 it imported 5,000 doses of Holstein semen from Italy, however the majority of these imports come from the US and New Zelanad.
According to official data, in 2011, Uruguay imported 65,626 doses of semen from France, Italy, Holland, England, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and Spain. The largest volume of semen was imported dairy Holstein, from Holland.
