FMD in Libya Affects Cattle and Sheep
LIBYA - The Libyan veterinary authorities have reported ten outbreaks of foot and mouth disease in Banghazi and Darnah.

The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) received follow-up report no. 1 yesterday, 27 February. The affected population comprises sheep and cattle.
A total of 157 cattle were found susceptible to the outbreak, out of which 48 cases were identified. A total of 23 deaths were reported. No animals were destroyed.
Legal movement of animals and spread of the virus through airborne means have been sourced as the main causes of the outbreak.
The affected farms are situated in the Eastern part of Libya. The origin of the infection is attributed to animals brought for a local market coming probably from the Western part of the country.
The collected samples from Eastern Libya were sent to the OIE Reference laboratory, Pirbright (United Kingdom) on 23 February 2012.
