Young Cattle Dominate Markets

AUSTRALIA - Supply was limited at Toowoomba, with young cattle dominating the market. Medium weight yearling steers to the trade gained 18¢ - to 206¢, while the small portion to feed averaged 205¢/kg, reports Meat and Livestock Australia.

The better quality heavy grown steers were firm on 170¢, while most medium weight cows sold around 122¢/kg.

Throughput edged higher at Tamworth in a yarding that was also up in quality. Light yearling steers to feed slipped by 8¢ - to 206¢, while the medium weights averaged 215¢/kg. Heavy yearling heifers to slaughter met strong demand, with prices 9¢ higher on 176¢/kg. Heavy bullocks settled on 176¢, while heavy cows sold from 142¢ to 149¢/kg.

Supply increased at Wagga with last week's stronger market drawing out extra numbers. The young cattle market was generally buoyant, as yearling steers to feed mainly sold from 192¢ to 209¢/kg. Yearling heifers to kill were 10¢ cheaper on 183¢, while the C3 grown steers averaged 183¢/kg. Heavy D4 cows topped at 155¢, and averaged 150¢/kg.

After Monday's markets the Eastern Young Cattle Indicator (EYCI) was 1.5¢ stronger for the week on 376.5¢/kg cwt. The trade steer indicator was 6¢ higher on 213¢, while feeder steers gained 5¢ - to 203¢/kg lwt. Heavy steer prices were 3¢ dearer on 177¢ and medium cow prices were firm on 136¢/kg lwt.
