Tight Supply May Push Prices Up

UK - Beef prices remain down on last year, with market volatility a continuing concern, livestock chairman Alistair Mackintosh has told the National Farmers' Union (NFU) council this week.

However, the board chair did suggest that as corn prices rise and it becomes uneconomic to finish black and white bull calves there is likely to be a tightening of supply after Christmas which will lead to firmer prices in the New Year.

The NFU meets regularly with processors and retailers to stress the need for a greater price commitment to UK red meat producers in order to achieve future sustainability.
