Botswana Vaccinates Cattle Against FMD

BOTSWANA - The country's veterinary authorities have reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) that cattle have been vaccinated against foot and mouth disease in the administrative division of Kasane.

The OIE received follow-up report no. 4 yesterday, 12 October.

According to the report, the last case in a calf was on 4 September 2010. Emergency vaccinations in the whole district were concluded on 20 September 2010. Inspections in kraals in the whole district are still being conducted as zero (case) reporting has been chosen as the surveillance strategy of choice.

The cause of the outbreak has been identified as contact with wild species. A total of 13453 animals were vaccinated.
