One New FMD Outbreak in Mongolia

MONGOLIA - More of Mongolia's cattle have been infected with foot and mouth disease (FMD).

The Mongolian veterinary authorities sent follow-up report no. 2 dated 21 June 2010 to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The report states that latest FMD outbreak took place on 14 June in the province of Dornod.

The affected population consists of cattle in which 17 were found infected State Central Veterinary Laboratory.

Non-structural protein ELISA, real-time PCR and real-time reverse transcriptase/polymerase chain reaction (RRT-PCR) tests were carried out on 16 June and the tests confirmed the presence of the FMD virus, type O.

More tests were conducted at the OIE's refernce laboratory, the Federal Centre for Animal Health in Vladimir. The tests include complement fixation test (CFT), gene sequencing, non-structural protein ELISA, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and virus isolation. The results revealed the presence of the virus in the country's cattle.
