Brazilian exports of beef totalled US$ 447 million in May 2010, a growth of 38 per cent compared to May 2009. Shipments totalled 175,000 tonnes against 158,000 in May 2009, reports The Brazil-Arab News Agency.

Russia was the main buyer of raw beef, with imports of 37,000 tonnes in May and revenues of US$ 92 million. In second place came Iran, with revenues of US$ 69 million and 26,000 tonnes. The United Kingdom was the main market for industrialized beef in the month, with US$ 12 million in revenues and 10,000 tonnes in volume.

The recovery of the global economy, the greater demand for beef in the main import markets and the hardship faced by Brazilian competitors contributed to the exports of Brazilian beef, according to Abiec director Otávio Cançado.

From January to May, exports in the sector reached US$ 1.9 billion, growth of 24 per cent over the same period last year. In terms of volume, the increase was three per cent, totalling 794,000 tonnes shipped.
