SOUTH KOREA - An update on the second foot and mouth outbreak announced in South Korea on 13 January 2010.

A second outbreak of the disease was announced on 13 January 2010. Two animals were reported to be infected with foot and mouth disease virus type A.

From two confirmed cases, 15 animals have been destroyed. The Livestock Quarantine Consultation Committee decided that not only all cattle in this second affected farm but also all cloven-hoofed animals in the area within 500m radius of the affected farm will be culled.

This second outbreak is 3.5km ay from the first affected farm and is located in the surveillance zone which was established following the first confirmation of the disease.

Movement restrictions have been put in place and this farm has epidemiological links with the first affected farm by human movement.

Cloven-hoofed animals in some of the farms which have epidemiological links with the first affected farm by human movement were decided to be culled.
