Russian Farming On Brink Of Collapse
RUSSIAN FEDERATION - More and more Russian meat farmers are deciding to sell their business due to huge losses suffered in the current financial conditions. Those who still have some hopes since the beginning of September have sent more cattle to slaughter and refused to make large winter feed stocks.
According to official data, over the past few months the number of dairy as well as beef cattle in Russia decreased by 200,000.
Due to low meat as well as milk prices, nearly 99 per cent of Russian dairy farmers are currently bearing losses, says the chairman of the Russian Milk Producers Union, Andrei Danilenko.
The main reason for this is low purchase prices, paid by the processors.
Beef farmer representatives claim that income is plunging dangerously low. According to them, current beef prices are 30 per cent less than a year ago and the money they get for cattle is on the way down.
