Union Calls For Slowdown Of Live Cattle Exports
AUSTRALIA - The union representing meat workers says live export cattle numbers should be reduced to stop abbatoirs cutting back on Australian workers.Reduce live cattle exports to keep Australian jobs is the message that the Australian Meat Industry Employees Union (AMIEU) is giving.
ABC Rural reports that a number of meat processors across the country have been forced to cut back shifts or reduce the number of operating days because of the availability of cattle. The AMIEU Secretary, Brian Crawford says that 704,000 head of cattle were exported to Indonesia in the first half of this year, which could have kept a lot of work going in Australia.
Abattoirs have said that to be more competitive they need prices to ease or more stock.
