Marfrig and Bertin End Talks
BRAZIL - Marfrig Foods SA, the fourth largest beef packer in the world, and its Brazilian competitor Bertin SA have ended negotiations to form the largest Brazilian beef processor.Bertin says it will focus on a R$3 billion plan ( US$1.6 billion), to be implemented over the next five years to increase its slaughter capacity to 21,000 head/day compared to the current 12,000 head/day according to executivedirector, Fernando Falco.
"A merger is not being discussed at the moment. We are focused on organic growth." Mr Falco said.
Marfrig announced in May that it was in talks with Bertin.
The company has 18 meat processing plants including nine in Brazil, five in Argentina, four in Uruguay and one unit in Chile. The company also processes chicken, pork and other products, and has capacity to slaughter 13,150 head of cattle per day in Brazil and another 7,800 in other countries.
