NZ Boost Manufacturing Beef Exports
NEW ZEALAND - New Zealand’s beef exports were steady in June, rising less than a percentage point on June 2008 to 39,730 tonnes swt.

Exports were strong to NZ’s largest market, the US, lifting eight per cent on the previous June to 19,269 tonnes swt. Shipments of manufacturing beef to the US rose 10 per cent during the month to 15,128 tonnes, accounting for nearly 80 per cent of NZ’s beef sent to the US.
Increased manufacturing beef exports have coincided with a period of higher cow beef production in New Zealand, with 36 per cent more cows slaughtered between October and May – a result of poor dairy prices and higher global demand for manufactured beef. At the same time, steer and bull slaughter have both declined, falling 8 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively (Statistics NZ).
June shipments of NZ beef declined 19 per cent to Canada (2,693 tonnes) and 26 per cent to Japan (2,753 tonnes swt), but rose 12 per cent to Korea (3,741 tonnes) and 30 per cent to Taiwan (2,918 tonnes).
