April 2009 was a five week month therefor overall slaughter estimates were larger than the months before. 97,000 steers were estimated to have been slaughtered, 80,000 heifers, 23,000 young bulls, 41,000 cows and adult bulls plus 3,000 calves. Calf slaughter estimates were actually down on March despite of the extra week.

The surveys of slaughterhouses also collect information on the meat produced which enables average dressed carcase weights to be calculated. They revealed that the average carcase weight of steers were up, from 358.6 kilogrammes to 360.6 kilogrammes. Heifers were also slightly up at 312.1 kilogrammes. Young Bull weights held steady as did cows and adult bulls. Calf weights were up significantly, from 29.8 kilogrammes to 33.1 kilogrammes.

Information on meat produced is also collected. This enables the total quantity of meat produced in the United Kingdom to be calculated. 81 thousand tonnes of beef were produced this month.

The average monthly slaughterings are affected by the number of weeks in the month. In order to provide a better, and more immediately accessible to readers, measure of trends over time, the following graph shows the average weekly slaughterings for each of the last three years.
