US Senators to Block Meat Imports from Argentina
US - Two members of the US Upper House have sent a bill of law to the US Congress, aiming to block the possibility of allowing beef imports from Argentina. This follows the proposal by the United States Department of Agriculture to allow product from selected Argentinean regions.
The bill aims to prohibit the importation of any ruminant or swine product from Argentina until the Agriculture Secretary certifies that all of Argentina is foot and mouth disease (FMD) free without vaccination.
Argentina is currently recognised by the World Animal Health Organisation as having FMD freedom with vaccination as well as having a region with FMD free without vaccination status.
