U.S. Canadian Cattle Inventory Down Two Per Cent
The US and Canadian cattle inventory is down by two per cent according to the National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), Agricultural Statistics Board, U.S. Department of Agriculture in figures released on 17 February.All cattle and calves in the U.S. and Canada combined totalled 107.7 million head on 1 January 2009, down two per cent from a year ago. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 46.6 million head, was down two per cent from a year ago.
All cattle and calves in the United States as of 1 January 2009, totaled 94.5 million head, two per cent below the 96.0 million on 1 January 2008. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 41.0 million head, were down two per cent from the 41.7 million on 1 January 2008.
All cattle and calves in Canada as of 1 January 2009, totalled 13.2 million head, down five per cent from the 13.9 million on 1 January 2008, and seven per cent below the 14.2 million two years ago. All cows and heifers that have calved, at 5.63 million, was down six per cent from the 5.97 million on 1 January 2008, and six per cent below the 6.02 million from two years ago.
