The country's "black box" electronic system of traceability that was made mandatory in 2006, is expected to see every cow and beef animal in the country ear tagged and registered by 2010.

Speaking at the SIAL food industry exhibition in Paris, Silvana Bonsignore, the international marketing director of the Uruguayan meat institute, INAC, said that the traceability system that involves all processors and cattle ranchers in the country was proving a success.

She said that the system was giving the Uruguayan industry greater price transparency and was allowing the ranchers to log on to the internet to see the prices, weights and yields their cattle were producing.

The Uruguayan beef industry's presence at SIAL in Paris follows a 90 day beef and lamb promotion in Saragossa Spain, where the industry opened a restaurant to boost awareness and sales of the country's meat.

The restaurant, "Uruguay Natural Parrialla Gourmet" also housed an exhibition on Latin American meat production.

The restaurant attracted 1,000 diners a day, some queuing for up to an hour to eat and more than 30,000 kg of meat were consumed during the promotion.

"It was very successful and the investment that INAC made proved a success," said Silvana Bonsignore.

"It was the first time the consumers were able to find out about Uruguayan products and we were able to communicate directly with them."
