EU Cow Prices Increase 19%
UK - The monthly average price for O3 cows in the EU increased by 19 per cent between the end of 2007 and the start of April 2008. According to a Livestock and Meat Commission (LMC) bulletin, the EU average rose from 163p/kg in December 2007 to 194p in April this year.

Prices in the UK and Ireland have risen more quickly than the overall EU average in 2008, due to the fall in cattle supplies. At the start of April prices in ROI, NI and GB were all above the EU average.
The graph below illustrates price movements in selected EU countries. The NI average is at its highest level since beef from cows returned to the market in November 2005. At the start of April it was 5p higher than the EU average at 199p. The ROI price has risen by 35 per cent so far this year to 219p, which is on a par with prices in France. Prices in GB have increased by the largest amount rising 61% (+74p) to 195p. Cow prices in GB had been negatively affected by the FMD export ban in the second half of 2007. The resumption of GB exports and tighter domestic supplies increasedprices.

EU Prime cattle prices also increased at the start of 2008 and the EU average R3 male price rose by 15 per cent between December 2007 and April 2008 to 255p/kg.
