Beef producers are continuing to benefit from the limited availability of product and relatively strong demand from processors.

According to Department figures, an average of 318c/kg deadweight (excl. VAT) was paid for R3 steers by the Irish meat plants during the week ending March 15. This figure was back marginally on the previous week, but still represents an increase of 11.5pc on the price for the same week in 2007.

Cattle prices in Britain have also risen steadily. The average price paid for R3 steers during the week ending March 8 was 246.3p/kg. This is equivalent to an Irish price of 322c/kg (deadweight excl. VAT).
