Brazilian Beef Finds Openings
BRAZIL - Brazilian beef exporters in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, who have been blocked from international markets because of foot and mouth disease, have found new openings in Egypt and Iran.

The exporters have failed to get recognition for the region to be free from FMD with vaccination on many markets, but now have been able to export 100,000 tonnes to the two Middle East countries.
Mato Grosso do Sul has already gained access to the Israeli market and 11 companies in the state are eligible for export.
Meanwhile, Brazil is hosting a delegation from Russia led by the head of the Russian state veterinary and food safety service, Sergey Dankvert.
The delegation is visiting the farm monitoring service, Vigiagro, and will be looking at the facilities at Porto de Santos, through which most of the meat exports to Russia are transported.
The visit follows the signing of a protocol on food safety and sanitary arrangements for meat exports last month. The port visit will show the Russian delegation how the meat is handled, the seals on the crates, the inspection system and temperature monitoring.
This week, inspection teams from the European Commission are also reported to be in the country inspecting farms and monitoring the sanitary situation in the country, following the recent ban on beef exports to the EU. The inspection is expected to last until mid March.
