German Meat Production Up in 2007

AUSTRALIA - Meat production in Germany rose 6% on 2006 levels, to 7.3 million tonnes, according to provisional figures published in the European Market Survey. Contributing to the increase was the 7% year-on-year increase in pork production to around 5 million tonnes. In addition, German poultry meat production increased 14%, to 1.1 million tonnes.

In 2007, German beef production was down only marginally, at 1.1 million tonnes. Cow slaughter slipped 6% year-on-year, as higher milk prices encouraged producers to hold on to dairy stock, while heifer slaughter fell 3% over the same period. Contrary to these falls, young bull and steer slaughter lifted 2% during the year.

The European Market Survey is anticipating a marginal increase in German beef production in 2008, with an anticipated increase in the number of young bulls available for slaughter, outweighing further tightening of cow supplies.
