US makes move to fully open border in 2006 to pre-BSE standards
US - While no target date has been set, the U.S. Department of Agriculture plans on lifting the remaining restrictions on Canadian cattle over-30-months within a year, restoring trade to the way it was pre-BSE. USDA administrator Ron Dehaven touched on the agency’s intentions this past week, however, nothing is set in stone yet and the older animals won’t likely be crossing the line until after the fall calve run in 2006. “It’s not really news to a lot of people in the industry, we knew they were working on it, but we have also been around long enough to know there could be some pitfalls between now and whenever the gate swings open,” said Neil Jahnke, who served as president of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association from 2002 to 2004.Source: MeridianBooster.com
