U.S. Cattlemen's Assoc. Unite Against Argentina

US - The American Task Force Argentina and the U.S. Cattlemen's Association announced today at a press conference that they have joined together in their efforts to insist that the U.S. government take stronger action against Argentina's pattern of defiance of international norms, from the country's debt repudiation to its unfair agricultural practices.

"We are encouraged by the enthusiasm of the Cattlemen as they join our growing coalition," said ATFA Executive Director Robert Raben, former Assistant Attorney General at the U.S. Department of Justice, "Our goal is the same. We are trying to raise the awareness that Argentina needs to work with us to show they are willing to address the problems with their economy and how those problems are affecting our taxpayers, our cattlemen and ranchers and our educators."

"Argentina does not live up to its promises," said Leo McDonnell, Director Emeritus for USCA, "How can we trust the Argentine government to take the necessary action in ensuring that the beef we are importing is free from Foot and Mouth Disease when the Argentine government is not upholding its contract with U.S. creditors?"

The Cattlemen and ATFA kicked off their joint-Congressional meetings with the House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture prior to a press conference at the National Press Club.

The USCA is one of 28 new organizations of educators, agricultural and taxpayer groups that have just joined the ATFA coalition. The coalition is engaged in various advocacy activities focused on increasing awareness of the impact of Argentina's default on U.S. taxpayers. ATFA's website, www.atfa.org, serves as a clearinghouse for news and information related to Argentina's restructuring and the ATFA's efforts.

Made up of an alliance of organizations, ATFA's leadership includes former assistant attorney general at the U.S. Department of Justice, Robert Raben, as executive eirector, and is co-chaired by The Honorable Robert J. Shapiro, former Under Secretary of Commerce for Economic Affairs in the Clinton Administration, and Ambassador Nancy Soderberg, Ambassador at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations in New York from 1997 to 2001.
