The programme vaccinating cattle is being extended to the 31 January.

The region has a cattle herd of about 13.2 million head and last year 94 per cent of the animals were vaccinated in the first stage of the programme and then 90 per cent in the second stage in June.

The programme superintendent Francisco Signor said that it was essential that the producers vaccinate their herds so that the state of Rio Grande do Sul can be recongnised as having a foot and mouth disease free status.

The programme is being audited by the Federal Supervisory Board for Agriculture (SFA) for the region and it is also offering logistic support the vaccination.

The producers have 30 days following their application for vaccine for the herd vaccination to be carried out and the vaccination has to be registered with the Ministry of Agriculture, Cattle and Supply (MAP).

Although it is down to the producer to carry out the programme, the government finances and controls the programme and ensures that only the official vaccines are used.
