president of ABIEC Marcus Vinicius Pratini de Moraes.

The value of the shipments has risen by 16 per cent over the period compared with same period last year.

"The strategy to seek out better quality and higher priced cuts has been especially successful," said the president of ABIEC Marcus Vinicius Pratini de Moraes.

"The result is that the growth in the value of the meat is already greater than the volume."

The value of the exports has reached $3.7 billion, while volume rose to 2.1 million tonnes.

According to ABIEC, Brazilian cold stores have been exporting the largest proportion of the world beef for the last two years, but the change in strategy to export high quality cuts had been very demanding.

However, Mr Pratini de Moraes said that the increase in the value of the meat being exported was also being affected by the value of the dollar.

Russia still takes the greatest proportion of Brazilian beef 531,000 tonnes worth $735 million. The USA takes most of the Brazilian manufacturing beef - 133,000 tonnes worth $242 million.
