McDonalds Plan Is Praised

UK - NFU Cymru has welcomed news that McDonalds intends to increase the amount of beef it buys from Wales, England and Scotland by 30% and it also intends to pay an increase of 5% in the price British farmers receive for the beef and pork purchased through partner suppliers.

Ed Rees, NFU Cymru Livestock Board Chairman said, “This is a very welcome gesture of support from an important British customer for British meat at a time of great difficulty for the livestock sector. We shall be monitoring the prices paid to farmers by McDonalds supplying abattoirs to verify that the increase earmarked for farmers is actually received by them and we would expect McDonald’s to take their own steps to ensure that happens.”

Mr Rees continued, “It is encouraging that a number of major customers are at last reading the writing on the wall for the future of their meat supplies if nothing is done to move livestock producers towards sustainable profitability. In that context, this will be helpful in rebuilding confidence among farmers.”
