Beef exports to the United States dropped 8 percent for the year.

The Rabobank Agribusiness Review reports the total value of beef shipped to the States was NZ$707 million, down from $782 million the previous year.

The decrease was attributed to strength in the dairy industry, causing more cows to be held back rather than to be sold for meat.

Shipments to the U.S. make up 44 percent of New Zealand's total beef exports.
