US Struggles In Beef Trade Talks

US - New United States Agriculture Secretary Chuck Conner concedes neither Japan nor Korea show signs they will fully reopen their markets soon to United States beef, hurt by several mad cow cases since 2003.

Mr Conner says Korea remains a source of "great frustration" on beef, where Seoul has failed to hold promised meetings this month on whether to adopt international beef safety standards.

Mr Conner says Japan's expected move from a 20-month to a 30-month cattle age standard for United States beef is also unacceptable.

"International standards for beef trade into Japan would allow us to ship all of our beef products of all ages. We simply need Japan to acknowledge that they're going to live by international standards," he said.
