Bishop's Castle Meat, of Bishop's Castle, employs 16 staff and is the only abattoir in Shropshire that can take cattle, pigs and sheep.

The plant shut down temporarily due to the FMD outbreak recently but management has now decided not to reopen.

Local MP Philip Dunne, whose family farm uses the abattoir for lamb, confirmed the closure saying that director Colin Kinmond would now seek a buyer for the business.

Dunne added: “It was the only firm able to take cattle, sheep and pigs in Shropshire.”

“Foot and mouth just finished us off and I am coming up to retirement so we decided to sell it on,” said Kinmond.
