They said it was “crazy” for English beef to be banned from export over one small outbreak, while at the same time imports from countries like Brazil and Argentina continue.

The Government has insisted meat is only imported from areas of the South American countries that are free of foot and mouth.

But Thomas Binns of the National Farmers Union chairman said yesterday: “We have very little confidence in the controls used.

“The European Federation of Veterinary Officers has visited Brazil and picked up inadequacies in the controls.

“It is really hypocritical of the EU to be draconian with EU member states when at the same time it is prepared to tolerate untraceable products from Brazil.”
