Twenty sick pigs on four small farms in Phong Dien and Ninh Kieu districts had tested positive for the virus this week, it reported.

Earlier, the northern province of Quang Tri had reported outbreaks in may.

Almost 600 cows, buffalos, goats, and pigs contracted the viral disease, mostly in five districts in Quang Tri.

Tuyen Quang and Bac Kan provinces in the north, Binh Dinh and Phu Yen in the central region, and Dak Lak in the central highlands had all reported outbreaks this year, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Bui Ba Bong said.

Over 4,300 animals had been infected.

Foot-and-mouth is a highly contagious disease affecting animals with divided hooves, in which the animal develops ulcers in the mouth and near the hooves.
