NFU president Peter Kendall said the losses suffered by the industry as a result of movement controls, the export ban and other knock-on effects of the outbreak will run into ‘many millions of pounds’.

He said the NFU was taking legal advice about the possibility of launching a claim on their behalf.

He stressed that for this to be possible, however, the exact cause of the outbreak would have to be established.

He was speaking on BBC’s Newsnight programme on Tuesday night, following the publication of the Health and Safety executive’s initial report into the possible causes of the outbreak.
