UK - The Ulster Farmers’ Union has responded to DARD’s decision to pay farmers for the value of animals which were wrongly condemned because of unfounded allegations about the use of illegal hormones. Suggestions by DARD that these casualty animals had the hormone alpha-nortestosterone illegally administered have been discredited.

UFU President Kenneth Sharkey

UFU President Kenneth Sharkey said; “The farmers involved in this saga have long since been completely vindicated. Suggestions by DARD that these casualty animals had the hormone alpha-nortestosterone illegally administered have been discredited. The actions of DARD this week have gone some way to address the farmers concerns; the value of the animals slaughtered is to be re-imbursed and an apology has been issued. The farmers also had the opportunity to meet and discuss the issue directly with the Minister and a review is now to be undertaken to learn lessons. These developments are to be welcomed”.

“However at least for some of the farmers and families concerned, who still feel aggrieved about the trauma and damage to their reputations, this is not enough. We would urge DARD to be available to deal with these cases on a one by one basis so that all the concerns can be fully addressed”.
