The Meat Industry Council, Cattle Council and Lot Feeders have faced calls to remove the material as insurance against an outbreak of mad cow disease.

Spokesman Ed Klim says the risk of BSE is low but the financial risk to the beef industry from an outbreak will be analysed.

"There were some studies conducted a number of years ago but they're now two years old and the science and things have moved on a lot," he said.
