February beef exports up

AUSTRALIA - According to figures released by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Australian beef exports during February increase by 6% compared with February 2006 levels, to 79,291 tonnes swt – the highest February volume on record. Increased shipments for the month were sent to Japan and Korea, while exports to the US were again lower.

Exports to Japan during February rose by 2% on the same time last year, to 33,433 tonnes swt, accounting for 42% of total Australian exports for the month. Beef shipments to Korea increased 38%, to 14,775 tonnes swt, as the absence of US product in the market continues to result in increased demand for Australian beef.

Indonesia also received an increased volume of Australia beef during February, to 1,760 tonnes swt, an increase of 230% on February 2006 levels.

Beef shipments to the US decreased by 6%, to 24,096 tonnes swt, as weak US beef demand continued. Exports for the month to Taiwan also eased back, falling 3% on the same time last year, to 2,053 tonnes swt.
