The rise in shipments for the month was driven by Korea and Taiwan, while exports to the US remained steady.

Strong demand for beef in Korea saw exports for January increase 73% on January 2006 levels, to 5,932 tonnes swt. Following on from a reduction in exports to Japan during December, shipments in January fell 14% from year ago levels, to 2,795 tonnes sw.

Shipments to the US totaled 15,918 tonnes swt - a slight increase on January 2006 levels, but well back on the volumes observed for the month in 2003 to 2005. Exports to Canada fell back 28%, to 1,886 tonnes swt.
