Japan export value falls slightly

AUSTRALIA - Despite reaching a record beef export volume (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry data), export value to Japan in 2006 dropped 6% to A$2.227 billion, according to figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Chilled export value in 2006 declined by 8% to A$1.525 billion, while the value of frozen products fell 2% to A$702 million compared with 2005 levels. Average value per kilogram was A$5.49 – a decrease of 1% or 5¢ from the previous year.

Average export value to Japan peaked in 2004 at A$5.57/kg, after US beef was banned in the market following their first BSE discovery.
