A decline in demand for manufacturing beef in the US, along with increased competition, contributed to NZ beef exports to the US declining 7%, to 187,686 tonnes swt – the lowest annual level for the past 10 years. Similarly, exports to Canada for the year dropped 17% on 2005 levels, to 24,652 tonnes swt, while exports to Mexico declined 42%, to 3,815 tonnes swt.

After an 11% increase in shipments during 2005, beef exports to Japan during 2006 eased 4%, to 37,049 tonnes swt. However, despite the slight decline in shipments for the year, exports to Japan in 2006 were still the second highest on record.

While shipments to Korea remained steady during 2006, at 43,715 tonnes swt, volumes to Taiwan fell 21%, to 22,816 tonnes swt.
