Cattle co-product values higher in November

US - Potential co-product values from cattle increased slightly in November, primarily due to higher hide prices. There were small increases in meat meal and tallow prices, while the value of offal was mainly higher. Co-product values are now above year ago levels.

The potential co-product value to be obtained from a Japanese grassfed steer (averaging 331kg cwt) (assuming 100% collection and sale of offal for edible use) was estimated to be $223.48/head in November – 3% above October 2006 levels and 9% higher than in November 2005. Offal represents an estimated 48% of this co-product value, hides 28%, tallow 16% and meat meal 8%.

The potential co-product value from a Japanese grainfed steer (averaging 350kg cwt) was estimated to be $246.30/head in November – 2% higher than in the previous month and 9% above year ago levels. In contrast to the other cattle categories, there was a slight decline in potential offal values for Japanese grainfed steers. This was, however, offset by higher values for hides, tallow and meat meal.

Estimated potential co-product values from prime steers (averaging 274kg cwt) and US cows (averaging 178kg cwt) were 2% and 3% higher than October levels (and 8% and 10% above November 2005), at $184.07 and $134.31/head, respectively.
