Wilson moves to reassure over resumption of beef exports
UK - Farmers were told yesterday that the Executive is committed to re-starting Scotland’s beef export trade by 2005. Beef exports were banned from the UK from March 1996 after a possible link between BSE and the fatal human disease CJD was conceded by government. Overnight, a trade worth about £125 million a year to Scotland disappeared.BSE cases have fallen steadily since then and beef exports have theoretically been possible for more than three years. But the restrictions imposed have made them economically impossible in practice.
