John Bryan said an IFA Livestock delegation attended a debate in the European Parliament Agriculture Committee where MEPs told officials from the EU Food and Veterinary office and the Commission that it was not acceptable to import beef from Brazil which did not meet the high standards applied to European production regulations on health, food safety, traceability and the environment.

Mr Bryan said many MEPs, including Irish MEPs, raised directly with the FVO and Commission officials the serious deficiencies on standards highlighted by the IFA following a study tour to Brazil last May.

“It was very clear from the debate that the European public representatives are not satisfied with the way the EU and FVO are formulating and implementing policy on imports which do not meet EU standards,” he added.

John Bryan said IFA has made the absence of standards on Brazilian beef imports a major issue at European level. “The EU policy of allowing in Brazilian imports which do not meet EU standards on traceability, food safety and the environment is not sustainable,” he said.
