Farmers warned over unfit cattle

UK - The number of seriously lame and unfit cattle being transported for slaughter has risen sharply, Cumbria trading standards chiefs have revealed.

Over the last three months, officials have examined 30 cattle from north Cumbria and southwest Scotland and found five were unfit to travel.

Now they are warning farmers they will be prosecuted if they cause unnecessary suffering to their animals.

The rise is being blamed on a shake-up of the cattle disposal rules.

Last year the Over Thirty Months Slaughter (OTMS) scheme was replaced by the Older Cattle Disposal Scheme.
