The move is part of a decision to move culling operations to its subsidiary Pomurka in Murska Sobota, in northeastern Slovenia, in a bid to cut costs, MIP chairman Marko Volk told STA on Friday, 3 November.

Slovenia's largest meat processing company has opted for this step because most of the cattle slaughtered by MIP - as well as most of Slovenia's cattle in general - are bred in NE Slovenia. The company will cut costs by moving animal slaughtering to Murska Sobota, Vovk explained.

Moreover, Vovk said that the company has had difficulties finding trained workers in western Slovenia, while there is no such difficulty in northeast of the country.

Around 17,000 heads of cattle were slaughtered at the Kromberk abattoir last year. According to Vovk, fewer than half of the 41 employees at the abattoir are to lose their jobs, with most being moved to other sectors in the company.

The facility in Murska Sobota is more modern and has a higher capacity (of around 30,000 heads of cattle) as well as all the necessary export permits, Vovk added.
